The Old Beach Store
A pocket-sized rebuild on the seafront at Sennen Cove, The Old Beach Store is a single-storey house, similar in size to a long, single-width garage. It was used as a beach café in the 1960s and, more recently, for storage by a local surf company.
Its tired appearance - brown pebbledash render, boarded-up frontage, and domestic-style doors - was at odds with its spectacular surroundings, the sort of building passers-by would either completely ignore or reflect sadly on its wasted potential.
The original building, together with a smaller one on the same site, has been demolished and replaced with a one-bedroomed home. It might be compact, but it's been designed to maximise the breathtaking, far-reaching sea views.
It boasts grey powder-coated aluminium bi-fold and sliding doors serving the main living areas, and a feature window in the gable end. The pebbledash has been replaced with crisp white modern thin coat render and timber boarding, entirely in keeping with its coastal setting. It's a great example of maximising the potential of a small site.
