The site at Golant, on the banks of the River Fowey, originally housed an incongruous, haphazardly extended bungalow, with a detached garage and store underneath. A challenging site, it sits on the side of a steep hill and originally only had pedestrian access from the road below.
Our client wanted to convert and extend the garage and replace the bungalow with two new homes. We staggered the planning applications and worked closely with a structural engineer to ensure the design took into account the retention of land behind the buildings.
Glazed walls were used throughout to maximise views across the river, whilst remaining sympathetic to the surrounding area. The garage was converted into a two-bedroomed property, enjoying views along the estuary, and was sold separately to fund the main build.
The replacement home is a timber frame building with horizontal cladding, and varying height gable ends and balconies. On the ground floor, a large terrace is accessed from the open plan living space. The double garage below features an electrically operated vehicle turn table.
A detailed landscaping scheme was prepared by our landscape architects, including lawned terraces, providing seating and recreational areas with river views.
